Environmental Engineering Intern

Position Summary

  • The Environmental Engineering Intern will be responsible for the execution of environmental compliance projects and for effectively interacting with members of the Environmental Health & Safety Team, and other departments they will work closely with. Project examples include developing the current waste stream manual into a workable training tool that incorporates current regulations and FHR philosophy, and completing the development of the NESHAP database to include troubleshooting and resolution.

  • Actively participate in the Intern Program by attending intern meetings, team building activities, learning lunches, facilitating and attending MBM meetings, and all other intern events.

  • Provide support to the EH&S Department with a personal commitment to working safely.


As an intern for the Summer of 2010, you will have an opportunity to work with the North Pole Refinery EH&S Department. You will be exposed to various areas within this field of work. Your work will be project based. While we believe a meaningful work experience is the most important part of a successful internship program, we also build in exciting activities designed to make the intern experience a lively and enriching experience for you. Some of the activities you will be involved in include Market Based Management training, volunteer experiences, professional networking, the NPR Family Picnic, Learning Lunches with members of the Refinery Leadership Team, and an end of summer presentation for refinery and university leaders.

Flint Hills Resources is a Wichita, Kansas-based refining and chemicals company that is wholly owned by Koch Industries. A leading producer of fuels, base oils for lubricants, and other petrochemical and commodity products, Flint Hills Resources and its affiliates have refining complexes in Alaska, Minnesota and Texas, and are investors in a base oils facility near Lake Charles, LA. The company also produces commodity chemicals within its Corpus Christi, Texas facility and chemical intermediates in its Joliet, IL plant. Flint Hills Resources Alaska's North Pole refinery near Fairbanks, Alaska, has a crude oil processing capacity of about 220,000 barrels per day. It is the largest oil refinery in the state. It processes North Slope crude oil and supplies gasoline, jet fuel, heating oil, diesel, gasoline and asphalt to local and international markets. About 60 percent of the refinery’s production is destined for the aviation market.


 
Requirements

Work Experience and Skills Required:




  • Familiarity with computer applications, including Microsoft Office Programs (Word, Excel, Outlook).


Education Required:


  • Currently seeking a BS in Engineering or Environmental Engineering or MS in Environmental Science with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.


Education Preferred:



  • Junior or Senior level standing.


Physical Demands or Unusual Working Conditions:
Must be able to communicate freely and effectively via normal work place channels using phone, computer network, and direct means. Must be able to work effectively on computer for extended periods of time. Must have the ability to perform the essential physical duties of the position including, but not limited to: walking, seing, hearing, lifting, bending, stretching, climbing, etc.

Other Considerations:
Offer of employment contingent upon successful completion of a pre-employment drug screen, background check, and baseline physical. Housing not provided.  Schedule:  8am - 5pm, Monday through Friday, or a flexible 9/80 Work Schedule available.
